How to Share Your Travel Map With Friends

By the YouVisited teamPublished 6 min read

Short answer: the easiest way to share your travel map is with a link. On YouVisited, every account has a profile at youvisited.uk/@yourname showing your map, statistics and achievements. Set it to public to share with anyone, or friends-only so only people you've accepted can see it, then send the link by WhatsApp, Facebook or any messaging app.

Travel is better shared. Whether you want to show your family where you've been, settle a friendly debate about who's seen more of the world, or plan the next trip together, a shared travel map makes it easy. Here's how to do it — and how to keep control over what you share.

1. Get your shareable travel map link

When you create a YouVisited account, you choose a username, and your travel profile lives at youvisited.uk/@username. It shows:

  • Your interactive map, with visited countries coloured in and city pins.
  • Your headline statistics: countries, percentage of the world, continents, cities and trips.
  • A breakdown by continent and the achievements you've unlocked.
  • Recent trips and selected photos — only the ones whose privacy settings allow it.

Your bucket list stays private: it's shown on your own view of your profile, never to visitors.

2. Choose who can see it

Before sharing, decide on your profile's visibility. There are three settings:

  • Public — anyone with the link can view your map. Search engines may list public profiles that have places on them.
  • Friends only — only people you've accepted as friends can see it. Others see just your name and photo.
  • Private — only you can see it.

Trips and journal entries have their own privacy settings too, and the stricter setting always wins: a public trip on a friends-only profile is only visible to friends. You can change any of these at any time, and the change applies immediately.

3. Share the link

From your profile you can copy the link, share it directly to WhatsApp or Facebook, or use your phone's share menu to send it anywhere else — Instagram stories, email, a group chat. Public profiles have a link preview that shows your name and travel counts, so it looks good wherever you post it.

Your statistics update every time you add a visit, so the link you shared last year will show your latest map today.

4. Add friends and compare your travels

Sharing a link is one-way. Adding friends on YouVisited goes further. Search for people by name or username, send a friend request, and once they accept you can:

  • See their friends-only map and trips.
  • Compare your travels side by side — countries you've both visited, countries only one of you has been to, cities in common, and totals for countries, continents, cities and trips, all on one map.
  • Discover new destinations from places they've been that you haven't — handy inspiration for your bucket list.

5. Plan and remember trips together

For trips you take with other people, shared trips keep everything in one place. The person who creates a trip can invite friends as editors (who can add memories and update details) or viewers (who can see everything). Everyone works from the same trip, adding their own photos and notes — no more scattered group chats and missing pictures.

One important detail: joining a shared trip doesn't tick places off on your map. Each person confirms the destinations they actually visited, so if you skipped the last city, your map stays accurate.

Sharing safely: a quick checklist

  • Check your profile visibility before posting a link publicly.
  • Review trip and journal privacy — especially for upcoming trips, if you'd rather not advertise when you'll be away.
  • Use friends-only if you want to share with people you know without your map appearing in search results.
  • Remember photo location data is removed on upload, but the place you link a memory to is shown to whoever can see it.

Ideas for sharing your travel map

  • Put it in your social bio. A link to your map tells people more about you than a list of flags.
  • Share it after a big trip. Post the link when you get home — friends can see the new countries light up.
  • Send it to family. Parents and grandparents often love seeing where you've been, especially if you add a few photos to your journal.
  • Settle the debate. Comparing maps is the quickest way to find out who really has been to more countries.
  • Swap recommendations. When a friend is heading somewhere you've been, send your profile and point them to your favourite places.

Common questions

Can people see my map without an account?

Only if your profile is public. Friends-only profiles require the viewer to be signed in and accepted as your friend; private profiles are never shown to anyone else.

Will my profile appear on Google?

Public profiles with places on the map can be found by search engines. Friends-only and private profiles are not indexed. If you'd rather not appear in search results, set your profile to friends-only.

Can I share just one trip?

Trips have their own visibility, and signed-in YouVisited users who are allowed to see a trip can open its link directly. Public trips also appear on your public profile. For a trip you took with others, invite them to the shared trip so everyone can contribute.
