How to make a map of the countries you've visited
Building a countries visited map takes a couple of minutes, even if you've travelled a lot:
- Start with the obvious ones — home, neighbouring countries and your big trips. Tap them on the map or type the name in the search box.
- Work through each continent in the checklist. Seeing every country listed is the fastest way to jog your memory about that weekend in Bratislava.
- Check the stats under the map: how many countries, what percentage of the world, and how many of the seven continents.
- When you're happy, create a free account. Your ticked countries carry straight over, so you don't have to start again.
What counts as a visit?
There's no official rule, and YouVisited doesn't impose one. Most travellers count a country once they've left the airport and spent some time there; others count a long layover or a day trip across a border. Pick the rule that feels honest to you and stick to it.
In your full YouVisited map, a country can hold as many visits as you like, each with optional dates and notes. Planned trips never count until you confirm you went, and wishlist countries are kept on your bucket list rather than your visited list.
How many countries are there in the world?
YouVisited counts 197 countries: the 193 member states of the United Nations, the two UN observer states (Vatican City and Palestine), plus Kosovo and Taiwan. That's the number your “percentage of the world” is based on.
You can also tick off 53 territories with their own country codes — places like Greenland, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong and Gibraltar. They appear on your map and in your list, but don't change the percentage, so visiting all of the Caribbean's territories won't inflate your world score.
Curious how the numbers break down? See the full list of countries in the world, or browse by continent: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, South America.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a map of the countries I've visited?
Tap each country you've been to on the world map on this page, search for it by name, or tick it in the checklist. Visited countries turn green and your count, world percentage and continents update instantly.
Do I need an account?
No. The map maker works without signing up and remembers your countries in this browser. Create a free YouVisited account to save your map for good, add cities, dates and trips, and share it with a link.
How is the percentage of the world calculated?
It's the share of the world's 197 countries you've visited: the 193 UN member states plus Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo and Taiwan. Territories such as Greenland or Puerto Rico can be ticked off too, but don't change the percentage.
Which countries and territories are included?
All 250 countries and territories with an ISO 3166 country code, grouped into Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America.
Does changing planes in a country count as visiting it?
That's your call — YouVisited never decides for you. Many travellers only count a country once they've left the airport, but your map follows whatever rule you choose.
